How to choose wisely from InHome Furniture
Metal bed frames, along with pine, have become more and more popular in recent years. They often form the centre piece of a suite of furniture in either contemporary or traditional form. Bed frames also have two major advantages; firstly, they come flat pack so they can be the solution to a room with difficult access and, secondly, the slatted/mesh base provides plenty of ventilation. In combination with a wooden or metal frame, they are a healthy option for allergy or asthma sufferers.

Bed frames can have various base options


Most pine beds have solid slats (as shown), while cheaper metal beds will also have solid slats or metal grid/mesh bases.

An increasingly popular option is the sprung slatted base. This has flexible, laminated slats which are secured using pivoting slat holders. This base option provides excellent support and comfort and is often found on the more expensive bed frames.


PLEASE NOTE
The above options are ideal with an open coil mattress. However, pocketed mattresses have individual springs and these would fall between the slats.
A pocketed mattress could only be placed on a slatted base if a solid base was created without any spaces or the mattress is made specifically for a slatted base
It is also advisable to place foam mattresses (Visco Elastic/Latex without springs in bottom of mattress) onto solid bases, rather than those with spaces between.

A better option for those who would prefer a pocketed mattress is a bedstead. This is where a thin divan base is placed onto two angle irons which connect the top and bottom of the metal frame with a mattress placed on top.
