Space savers, or guest beds, offer an excellent solution to those who enjoy having friends or relatives to stay but do not have the space for a permanent spare bed.
The sofabed is the most universally popular answer to the 'no spare room problem'. Needless to say, there is a wide choice of styles and prices. From the generally more expensive fold-out sofabed, which has a completely sprung or quality foam mattress folded away within its interior and is indistinguishable from a normal sofa, to the cheaper futons and click clacs, which do not disguise their dual purpose nature and are generally not as comfortable to sit on, but are comfortable when used as a bed.

It is important to remember, however, that your room needs to be large enough to take both beds when required.

Another alternative is the folding bed on wheels which can be obtained in various sizes. These can be easily moved around and can be converted into a curtained shelf unit if there is nowhere to store it.
Until recently, these were only made for occasional use. Now, however, permanent sleeper versions are available.

In must be remembered that all dual-purpose furniture represents some degree of compromise and it is true to say that, in the less expensive designs, the compromise is likely to be more noticeable. When you are choosing a convertible, no matter what type it is, try out both the seating and bed that it provides. If you want something that will be slept in four or five nights a week the answer is not likely to be the same as if your need is for something for friends over half a dozen weekends a year; what is suitable for a visiting child may not be ideal for a visiting granny.
